Hi all. The microwave smelting pages got me thinking. Why not combine a microwave with an induction heater?!
would seem possible, and with only the simple step of replacing the existing heating element at the top of the oven (most of the older ovens have an exposed element) with suitably shaped induction coil mounted in ceramics it ought to work fine.
Obviously you can't operate them at the same time but this is not a big problem. Maybe operate the IH to get the sample up to say 200C, microwave runs at a 50% duty cycle with the IH on during the other 50%.
you'd need to be very careful about microwave leakage, encasing the entire IH inside the existing outer casing should help here as would grounding the IH coil to the casing when not being used. Ideal application for a vacuum tube based IH too.

In microwave oven smelting the sample is in a crucible of something like silicon carbide which will readily absorb the microwaves and turn them into heat. If this crucible is in turn surrounded by the copper work coil of an induction heater I would wonder how well the microwave would be able to heat the crucible.
And what would the benefit be of using both? Is one of them more effective than the other in certain temperature ranges?
