This was one of the more dangerous (fun) projects I built to test the ability of high voltage to disaggregate a rock sample...

Cheers!

Yes, at the end of the 18 page build log, there is a video of it smashing up drill cores.

Specs of the generator?
Things like stage capacitance, inductance of the inductors, etc.
That is one awesome beast!

Nice site, but you should make a show all pages button. It's kind of a PITA to keep pressing "next page".

I read the whole thing, and I have to say that is very impressive! It shows that HV is not just for fun, it has some potential uses too!

Just wondering, what is that yellow mineral you disaggregated from a rock sample?

Thanks for the comments!

The yellow gem was Sapphire if I remember correctly. I broke up everything from gold to diamond samples in that beast.

Excellent project and very cool website! smile

I constructed a hv pulse generator a few years ago, but it's only rated at 4KV with a 100uF pulse capacitor. I've used it to deform aluminum tubes and to shoot aluminum discs into the air, but other than "playing" with it, I found no serious use for it. As time permits, I'm going to construct a water-arc cannon and see how far I can launch a small projectile. FUN STUFF!

HIGH VOLTAGE ROCKS! (no pun intended!! LOL)

Hm, you are sure you have 10ns pulses? That would be an awful good timing... I am building a Marx which is contained in a metallic tube under pressure (to adjust the firing voltage and help to trigger the other gaps via electric field in the tube), but I have a hard time to get such fast discharge times.
Anyway, you did a great job! My brother-in-law works for a company doing the same to separate rocks.
