I had good success using a dab of Apiezon vacuum grease on the threads during the assembly. Better than epoxy if you plan changes later on. For leak testing acetone works well in the 1 to 50 mTorr range with a themocouple gauge and can sometime seal the leak until it warms up again.

Hey guys
Thanks for the advice but I already glued it together so I'll just have to hope its sealed up nice and tight! That device 'neon John' has made there seems rather complicated.
Im planning to make a nice wooden box to contain the brass and a HF HV power supply, so if everything goes as planned it wont be necessary to take the fittings apart.
Hopefully I wont need the tips for finding leaks now its all epoxied but thank you anyway

Hello
I have the most wonderfull news! I sealed it up with loctite epoxy(its called 3422 A&B in case you were wondering) the other day, and the system apears to be completely air tight. Yesterday at around 1300hours I pumped it down to 50mbar and left it there until today at 1400hours, and the pressure apeared unchanged
Today I put some new oil in my vacuum pump, and it can now pump it down so far that it goes off the scale at my stupid analog manometer!

Thank you
I dont think it will be necessary with an accurate measure of the exact pressure? I just have to know if the system is leaking and have a way to determine how much Argon is added so I can reproduce it, and for that the silly analog meter I got is fine I think.
I have already made a pretty glow discharge in the flask. Later today I will fill in a small amount of Argon and see how that'll do. If the results are good with my system I will probably buy some Neon, perhaps some Krypton or Xenon but I heard the last two are very expensive.
I also plan to wind my own high frequency transformer on a flyback core when I get some suitable wire. But I suppose that is for another thread. I'll make a projects thread when I have made more progress.
