These holograms basically reverse the concept that you can cut up a "normal" hologram and have every piece become a window on a scene. They record lots of ~1 mm2 window holograms, which composited give the complete hologram.
Each such window is essentially treated as a pinhole, so you only have to calculate/record the light from all directions which simplifies matters immensely (the light is modulated during recording by a LCOS or DMD, with each pixel representing a direction).
