Conical Secondaries

After extensively googling cone shaped and bi-cone shaped secondaries, it seems very few people have actually made these and even fewer know much about them.. Does anybody know what kinds of effects these produce and why somebody would go to the trouble of wrapping one like this?

I've seen a few instances in the literature where conical secondaries were used in Tesla transformers.

These transformers were used to provide a pulsed high voltage to accelerate electrons; i.e., the HV was applied either directly or indirectly to an "electron diode", to make X-rays or to extract an electron beam for some other purpose.

Usually, in these applications, the Tesla transformers (aka "dual resonant pule transformers") have a coupling coefficient of about 0.6, and one end of each winding is grounded.

Since one end of each coil is grounded, on that end, the coils can be close together, which increases the coupling coefficient. And this allows for the other ends of the coils to have a greater radial separation (either by tapering the primary outward or the secondary inward), which decreases the coupling coefficient, resulting in the same net coupling coefficient, but with better insulation, i.e., there is a larger strike distance between the HV end of the secondary and the primary, and a lower electric field.

Interesting.. do these produce any different effects in terms of coil resonance with voltage or frequency build up? Were they used (or are they used) in a bi-polar setup with a center tap?
