As a resident I can say that this is without a doubt one of the most disgusting things which has happened here in memory. To witness a madman kill for distorted ideology (& to murder a child as well) is beyond all reasoning.
What I think is a shame is that now we will see people trying to make political capital of this tragedy instead of looking at root issues such as a serious lack of mental health treatment alternatives. It has never been about the video games or what have you. The USA is a country beset by a occasional madman, who periodically do things of this nature periodically going back well beyond previous decades......
Mental health issues have been all but abandoned since they are so complex due to monetary issues, assessment, and the rights of an individual to be protected from "Quackery".
This is not a simple task; nor does it have simple solutions.

My thoughts exactly. Makes me ill to see people trying to lay this at the feet of a particular political party or figure. There are some important lessons that could be learned here, but not if the issue becomes polarized to the point where an open dialog cannot be established.

I took my son to the site today. We had a very long talk. I wanted to make sure that he knew that no matter the issue he could always come to me with confidence that I would LISTEN (& would offer advice if he wanted it). I also took some time to explain the depth of what acts such as these beset a community (or nation). From the unbelievable suffering of dealing with the death of a loved one to the lack of resolution to a problem by taking actions ill thought out.

There is NO simple answer to problems such as this. And I made sure he understood that often there is no one causation for the focus of violence of a disturbed individual.... But that the repercussions are never what the preconceived notions of the perpetrator thought they would be!

Only cowardly, intellectually bankrupt garbage kills the elderly or children to make a political statement. May he spend his life in [the Federal Penitentiary's] General Population explaining how brave he is to the rest of his new community. We don't want him here!
