If you can get a Neon Sign Transformer (NST) or Oil Burner Ignition Transformer (OBIT) of the old type, heavy transformer, NOT electronic, then without doubt the easiest start is a SGTC.

The easiest would be to build a small solid state Tesla coil such as a single-transistor based SSTC. This way you get some exposure with electronics, and don't need to worry about a high voltage transformer, a spark gap, etc...
Plus, it will serve as a good starting point as you work your way up to disruptive type solid state Tesla coils such as DRSSTCs.
