So, you're the new guy that the X-ray company just hired to drag them into the high-frequency age? smile

Here are some questions to ponder, I'm surprised they weren't already asked of you at the job interview.

Why does 70kVp = 50kV DC? (Is X-ray emission a linear function of voltage?)

What if the transformer were 6186 or 6188V? What if they got the turns ratio right, but the line voltage changed from 230.0 to 229.9? Can you calculate the output impedance of a multiplier?

all the experience here will cooperate to accomplish the goal.
This is a forum for high voltage hobbyists working on amateur projects. Many of us are professional engineers with high voltage experience, but we don't talk about work. Not for free anyway.

Most AC flybacks can handle 6186V easily. You can get one on ebay for about $15.

Or you could ask a manufacturer to make one for $200+. It's up to you.

Also, the battery for this is going to be big and heavy, unless you want to spend $200 on an A123 LiFePo4 battery pack.

It is just research, do not worry about working for free. I know you are expericed engineers, I just want some points to be clear for me to start designing the power source.

Thanks,

Do the flybacks provide up to 56mA???

I've sent 100ma through a flyback with no big problems. For non continuous use it's fine, just don't run it for minutes on end. I'd say about 1 minute should be good, but since you are only doing short exposures even that is more than you need.

I would advise you to buy a modular portable X-ray power supply, which will be much cheaper than trying to develop one of your own to the necessary standard.

As an example only, here is a compact unit from Matsuada, designed for portable X-ray applications such as yours:

off-topic: I wouldn't feel too safe (actually I would never approve it) to know my dentist built his own xray machine and will using it on me.

i don't think you're at all off-topic Radhu.

Were I a less diplomatic person, I'd say that the whole thing was a load of old prostii.

I am sorry if you feel I have been unkind.

I'm sure you will be able to find others more able to understand just what it is you want than I have been. smile
