At what frequency do toroid arcs turn into flames? And what type of rectification/ coil style (sstc, sgtc, etc) can be used to create these flames?

Arc2 Big

Thanks

Oh my God that flame is beautiful! Im stunned...

Anyway, i have only done it with vacuum tubes, but i have gotten a flame no lower than 10MHz, with smoothed supply, and no topload. I really wish i knew more about the pic that you just posted! Have any more info?

Anyway, Richie Burnett AKA Geordieboy is the only person i have seen make a solid date coil with a flame, and his ran 4MHz (at least the thouroughly documented one), though his was not a flame like a lighter. It was crazier and what i would describe as 'hectic'. Link2 Search plasma tweeter for more arcs like this, though most are smaller and with tubes. My favorite video of one is this: Link2 Very efficient, the tube is only 40w dissipation. Also here is mine: Link2 The flame is not straight up as it is halfwave rectified.

That is where I found the picture. I've seen the 4mhz coil before, pretty cool stuff

Oh, ok, that is a ground arc, not simply breakout. That happens at any frequency with a sstc when you draw an arc so long as it has high enough on time, especially CW.

When you say ground arc, do you mean to a grounding rod that is being pulled away from the toroid, drawing the arc length further away from its origin? How does cw affect this? Thanks!

Yes, that is what i mean. CW would make it thicker and more stable, it looks roughly like a flyback arc at relatively high power.

If you used a flyback on a sgtc in place of the NST, would you get similar effects to flames as breakouts from a toroid, or would the breakouts look the same as a NST style coil? Does frequency come in to play to alter the flyback's breakout appearance?

The breakouts would look the same.
Flyback TC's are charged using DC, so frequency doesn't matter here.
