I suppose, but I think a better market strategy would be to make a bunch of them and sell them cheap. They could become a big hit with the manufacturers and then they buy them by the millions.

Who buy them by the millions? There isn't a large market for the kind of exotic power electronics that would have 1200v silicon carbide diodes in it. I know of one high-end PC power supply that uses one, but it's presumably a 600v part.
Similar situation as with the miniblock IGBTs. The Fairchild part we loved to use in our Tesla coils cost about 30bux and was discontinued due to lack of demand. They never sold enough for the price to start coming down. I guess the hundreds of samples we vaporised didn't count.
A shame, because there's nothing quite as good left on the market.
Iamsmooth's project is the first amateur use of SiC diodes I know of.
