What does "Appear to work" mean?

Well tubes rarely, if at all, have a short inside. That test doesn't help at all, unless used to check continuity on the filaments to ensure they are intact.

To test you would need to actually use the tube by checking plate current at different grid voltages. If one has a mangled plate, i wouldn't trust the other 3.

It certainly is a bit of a puzzle to explain how a thermionic valve tester should turn out to look like this, if no more than a heater continuity test and a check for shorts are all that's needed to tell the good from the bad. smile

As pious folk will know, this is the exact model of valve tester that will be operated by Jesus at the Last Judgement to decide which valves will be admitted to Thermionic Heaven, and which will be consigned to a toxic waste dump near an infants' school in Mexico.

Hi,

So what model tester is that? It sure doesn't look like a hickok to me. Is it a dreaded audiofool tester? mistrust

Doesn't look old to me.

Not even Batman can save you now, Boy Wonder!

This AVO Valve Characteristic Meter Mk III was manufactured by AVO Ltd, London, in the early 1950s.

The style of case, knobs, and typography, together with the layout of the front panel are typical of British instrument making c. 1945 - 1955.

As for audiophools, I'd guess their knowledge of thermionic valve testers was similar to your own.

Enough of this off topic banter.

There are four tubes of unknown health for sale. Without high quality pictures I guess the price anyone is willing to pay will be very low.

Posts after this will disappear without a trace if they are not directly related to the sale and trade of the tubes in question, off topic posting is only allowed on the general chatting forum.
