All the schematics I find are are either tetrode or pentodes... I need a triode!

thinking about running it off of GU-5B, and maybe 811a's (i'll think about the 811a's they have been pissing me off lately) wink

I just lashed together a dual 811 and I semi like it. Trying to learn how to tune it is like learning to walk without knowing how to crawl. I bought a matched pair but one is running much hotter then the other and every time I take a step forward I end up taking 2 back but I enjoy it because it doesn't sound like a banshee and its another notch in the old Tesla coil belt. Stick with the 811's because they seem to be forgiving and they can handle some abuse.

You should really heed the advice mentioned, 811s are cheap and fairly noob friendly. It will be better for you in the long run to build and perfect a VTTC first with 811s before using something like a gu-5b. Ofcourse, this doesnt matter if you enjoy headaches and wasting your money.

So, enjoy your Gu-5b... just dont come crying here when you wreck it.

First, we do not ask for complete schematics on this forum.

Second, you should do some research and read up on tube oscillators, there are huge archieves online of old scanned radio books that could help you on the subject, its better to actually learn than just make a new thread everytime you want to build something.

Have you tried tapping your feedback coil? Give the tube that runs hot a turn less than the other and try it from there :)

For building a VTTC where you have these kind of questions, I would not recommend a tube in a ceramic envelope, get something in glass where you can actually monitor the plate current with your eyes, making you able to turn the vttc off before the red hot plates burn down...

We are all here to learn, share and help, but we ourselfs have to do most of the work :)

wouldn't u hold a grudge on a tube if you bought 3 bad batches, i finaly bougt a nos 811a and ran a vttc with 960volts (mains 240 with quadrupler) and mad tiny peach fuz arcs, the tube ran cool but a little bit of corona is not good enough for me! cheesey

Well, if you are not willing to take our advice, why ask? I really love the 811A, even though i have a GU-81m, albeit DOA, and an 833C, it is my favorite tube im pretty sure. They are cheap, bulletproof, and plenty powerful.

You got peachfuzz sparks not because the tube is not powerful enough, but because you likely have a bad impedance mismatch, the plate voltage was much lower than what it takes to get the size of sparks you see on the forum or youtube, and probably a mistuned circuit. I got 11" with an 811A once with a 1" by 6" secondary, and it ran cool (CW). Takes a ton of tuning, but really worth it.

So, now that you have a beefy tube you are just going to use a lot of power to overcome a highly inefficient system?

To more directly answer the question, though, a triode driven base fed vttc is the same as a pentode or tetrode mostly. As you surely know, triodes have lower gain and require more driving power, so instead of an antenna like feedback, you use a magnetically coupled coil for feedback. You've seen my video on youtube with some 4 inch sparks with 10MHz operating freq, that used a magnetically coupled feedback coil. Do some research instead of asking for schematics, learning to figure most of your questions out on your own is very rewarding. Maybe review the rules, too, even though i am sorta breaking a rule telling you to check the rules, but someone's gotta say it!

i'm sorry people for not listening,but,$150 later and a wasted summer, I still didn't have a vttc! I am itching to get big yellow sword! and don't forget i'm one of the few people who don't ABUSE my 811a!
