What is a max safe or "normal" temperature of the heatsink? i'm afraid to run my coil more than 30 seconds... i'm using the igbts irg4pc50ud with 30v at the gates.

what is the maximum heatsink temperature in yours coils?

What is a max safe or "normal" temperature of the heatsink? Keep it under 660 degrees celsius and the heatsink will survive(cant say much for the IGBTs though).;-)

I follow a pattern I found in some commercial units. Fans turn on around 135°F and the bridge gets disabled at around 165°F...

Heatsink temperature right next to the IGBT module...

thanks TheBoozer, i was afraid with 86ºF hehehehe, but i'm using a TO-247AC package igbt that isn't good for keep cool.. but i am thinking that this can survive at 135F. My fans are ON all the time.

What igbt are you using?

According to the datasheet for your IGBT, the maximum temperature is 150 degrees F, so 135 is cutting it dangerously close. Performance decreases as the temperature rises so it's best to keep it at a manageable temperature.

My personal rule of thumb is "if it's too hot to touch I need to fix something."

I generally agree with this as well, if your heat sink is to hot to touch then you need to fix something (probably bigger IGBTs tongue)

No, 150 degrees C which is about 280F.

Oops, my bad! That's quite a difference.

In my experience, though, failure comes shortly after exceeding touchable temperatures...

I ran my coil about 2 minutes and the heatsink heated C, I think that if a run for more time don't have problem...
