Interesting animation, Pokemon.

I rather suspect, though, that it is the capacitor that is responsible for switching the circuit. The animation doesn't make this clear, at least I don't think it does. (This is just an 'uneducated guess')

Anyway, back to my current circuit. Decided to run a few more tests using the lightbulb. got some 'interesting' pulsing effects around 100 hertz, suggesting there is no smoothing cap on the output of my battery charger.

Also, the circuit ran fine up to 5 kHz, after which the bulb dimmed, then went out.

I'm not sure why this is. Could be the sig. gen. output current drops as frequency increases, could be something to do with rise time/fall time, I'm not sure. Could be something else.

I suppose the first step is to add some capacitance across the output of the charger. I've some 100microfarad 25 volt electrolytics, was thinking of adding four or five in parallel to give around 5000 microfarads. Not sure how they will cope with voltage spikes, though. Could try adding a choke, but imagine this will have a negative effect at higher frequencies.

Also thinking of adding a resistor (50 ohm?) across the base/emitter of the transistor to increase switch off speed. Not sure if this will achieve anything, will have to try it and see.

If all that fails the only other thing I can think of is to try a Darlington.

Any other suggestions or comments?

This simulation is incorrect. There is nothing like the shown waveform in this circuit. There is no inductance in the transformer, and so no resonance.

I rather suspected the animation 'left a lot to be desired'.

I disagree that there is no resonance, though. I think there is some between the inductor and capacitor, and that the primary adds to this, but I don't really know a lot about these things.

The capacitor must form part of a 'tank' circuit though, otherwise the circuit wouldn't switch? (just the observations of an uneducated noobie)

I've added 5000 microfarads smoothing capacitance and it seems to have sorted everything.

I tried adding a choke, but, as expected, performance reduced as frequency increased, so I removed it. (The 25V electrolytics seem to be coping on their own.)

I drew some arcs, and they are biggest at 30 kHz.

Is this the best I can expect from a 2N3055H/flyback, or should I try for better results at higher frequencies?

(The spec sheet I have has no graphs on it.)

I realize I messed up the ZVS Simulation and have made a corrected simulation video here --> Link2

I had to change the inductor, capacitor and transformer values to get it to function properly and with decent performance (it is a Java Applet after all) and the sim uses ideal components and not even remotely as accurate as say SPICE.

Anyway, it has a proper sine waveform on output, the LC is doing it's thing and the MOSFETs drive alternately as expected. Just ignore the output frequency and voltage :)
