you wan't to amplify a signal with the 2n3055?

just put you signal inter the base and ground your signal generator to the emitter of the transistor, then put the primary and your power supply in series with the collector and em miter of the transistor, you want more power put a (around 1uf cap) 250 volt in parallel with the primary, and a diode across the cap.

Sounds good to me. Will an electrolytic be ok across the primary, or should I use something like a MO cap or 'roll my own'?

What value/type of diode would you reccomend across the cap? (a fairly fast one, I assume, but what about forward voltage? Presumably not an MO diode as they take 10V before they start to conduct?)

just take some caps out of a monitor, look for some rectangular prism caps, there like .33uf put 2 of them together in parallel, and just rip a big diode out of a monitor, most of these projects can be build with components from a tv or computer monitor.

I guess i wouldn't recommend an electrolytic cap

I'm already half way there....been paralleling some caps up earlier......biggest diode I've identified so far from a monitor is 1.2A.....got some 1A ones too.....but no 5A so far......I understand it's not a good idea to parallel these......unless you add resistance too......any ideas?

I have put diodes of the same type in parallel without problems. You wouldn't want to put different types of diodes in parallel as they may have different voltage drop.

I would find a few high speed diodes of the same type you might have lying around and put those in parallel. The diodes you add up does not have to be exactly 5 amps for this circuit.

Thanks for the advice Plasmana, I'll try it.

I made a bridge rectifier for mots and i series and parallel a bunch of 1N4007 diodes with out a problem,

here are some pretty beefy ultra fast diodes Link2

and 25 of them that should work great cheesey

I've tried a few 1 and 1.2 amp diodes on their own on a 12V supply with a 3 ohm resistance (limiting it to around 4 amps) and they are allowing 2 amps or more through but they get pretty warm, but not blown any yet.

I'm just soldering a few up in parallel, then I'll see how much current they pass and whether they all warm up evenly.

If they don't, I'll add some 1 ohm resistances in series with each one.
