Hi all. OK, I did something like this a few years using LEDs flashing in a random pattern. Looked cool for about 5 minutes then got a bit boring.
My idea is to use one of those $5 1.1" digital picture frames (as they are on special offer) and glue them to the bottom of a fibre lamp. Said lamp happens to have three AA batteries , so in series with a diode to give the required 4.1V. it can easily run the frame for a lot longer than the original 50mAh lipo even with a 0.5W white LED. It even has a nice blue 8mm in there already with the same pinout and spacing.
EDIT:- confirmed that it works, a single button gets it into USB mode when pressed three times. Set contrast to max, enable 1 second slideshow and contrast to maximum. Load pictures consisting of lots of vivid colours in random patterns.
The backlight LED can be reused as can the diffuser panel, substituting a sanded down 0.5W LED or salvaged mobile phone screen backlight panels.
pics soon, just finalising the mechanics.
