Because everybody knows it's a good idea to fire guns on board an aircraft.
Mythbusters "proved" that bullet holes in the fuselage won't down a plane. But hitting wiring, hydraulics, fuel lines or a computer can. There's an old story about consultants in World War 2, hired to determine where to add armor plates to bomber airplanes. They surveyed the bullet holes in bombers that had returned from battle. Places where none of those planes had holes, were good places to add armor.
