The capacitor will see AC, and depending on the load, possibly up to full voltage reversal.
But if you added a reverse protection diode to bypass the negative voltage across the capacitor then you could use a polarized capacitor.

The cap will not see AC as long as its reactance is << the load impedance.

The capacitor also has a 50% chance of seeing negative on transformer's first cycle... :)
He didn't specify his application so I think it would be best to add the diode for protection...

I wanted a "sputter" type class-e SSTC, in which the timer is set to start at 0V and turn off at peak pulse voltage. This effectively makes crude VTTC/QCW type sparks at the right freq ~350khz. Thanks for all the input!!
