After the 2006 movie "The Prestige" in which besides tesla coils and the famous Colorado Springs lab, you can see David Bowie play Nicola Tesla,
in this years movie "The Sorcerers Apprentice" one of the main characters is into tesla coils (audio modulated DRSSTC included) and it even uses them to kill his final enemy!

Havn't seem the first movie, but I did see "The Sorcerers Apprentice" when it came out =D I'm sure the majority of the tesla coil stuff was semi-real semi-FX. Especially the one mounted to the car, because supposedly it would hit a guy standing 6ft from the car, and not hit the car it self xD
