what the hell does this mean?

I was wandering through the local Target and noticed a line of microwaves on the shelves. being an HV and EE Phd. i thought why ot look at the new 1.5kW one, when i noticed the label "with inverter tecnology". so what does this mean ? it dam well better not mean there're getting rid of my precious MOTS.... are they?

if the inverter is the replacement for the ailing MOT technology then i guess its GOOD and BAD. the Good is we willl snag many MOTS in the coming years. The bad is that MOTS are like a battle ship or main battle tank (big, dangerous, hard to destroy) where as the inverters are kinda flaky (cry babies) when arcing a dead short.

please tell me it aint so...

Im afraid thats how it is. If you search on "inverter" and "microwave" you get a few hits.

I was gutting one of these kind of ovens before a while ago.
in short, I was very unimpressed with what I found.

All it is inside is a ferrite like core, its all solid state, no precious metal chunk of HV goodness.
these things are quite fragile as said, and I killed mine when trying to pull an arc out of it. (lasted a few seconds then something died).
there is not too many usefull parts in these type of microwaves IMO, other then a few exeptions, all the parts arent worth shit.

the thing with older ovens, is that the MOT can be run directly off mains. this really allows more flexibility for its use, and they are just more robust then the solid state alternative.

old microwaves FTW.

It's those darned enviromentalists and "OMG our energy and carbon foot print!"

That and some company probably realized that 6oz PCB that can nuke food is cheaper then a 5# transformer.

Well or some over zelous over protective mom saw her poor innocent child watching people creating dangerous arcs with a MOT and sent a message to a company, and all her over protective freinds joined the band wagon, (thats how fireorks bcame illegal in 48ish of the 50 states, that and too many unsupervised kids blowing off body parts with M150's).

You will have to learn the true art, that is how to wind transformers as you want them. Or how to make arcs without destroying things, that is another art...

Antonio: another nice thing with MOTs is that they are factory-wound and stuff as much copper (or aluminum...) into the core window as possible, you will NEVER be able to do this at home... This means the homemade transformer needs to be bigger for the same power, but on the other side you can design it with less induction in the core so it doesn't get as hot after long operation.

I don't really see the big problem. Conventional MOTs are still used in a lot of microwave ovens, and will continue to be used in the cheap ones for many years to come. Not to speak of the billions of MOTs already manufactured.

Personally I think the new inverter MOTs are much more interesting, with IGBTs, high speed diodes, heatsinks, litz wire and ferrite cores. They may not work as well for just drawing arcs from, but I bet a lot of the parts could be used in for example a DRSSTC. I'd also bet there's a good chance that an inverter MOT could be modified (with some effort) into an adjustable 0-2000V current limited supply. Much more useful than the old iron core beasts IMO.
