HEF4046 Feedback issues

Hello

I am currently making a PLL SSTC from Steve Conner's DWSSTC - Link2

My coil is wound with 31AWG on a 11cm*25cm PVC form, and the Fres is around 300khz. Currently everything is on breadboard, but im planning to move it to some perf board soon, once I fix the circuit.

So I followed the schematic exactly, but i grounded the HEF4046 14 pin. I also change the resistors to 15k in series with a 10k pot and 22k in series with a 10k pot, and 330pf cap. for testing purpose.

Like that, the PLL and VCO is just running open loop, with the VCO's 10k pot determining the frequency. I can see the inductive and capacitive regions, and fres, and the 180* phase shift from inductive to capacitive side as I move the VCO pot, as is explained in richie's sstc site Link2 . Everything is in order, and when I hit Fres the coil breaks out a 2cm streamer (2A@35VDC).

However, this is the problem. when I remove the ground connection from pin 14, the sparks all go away and the frequency changes. There is now 2 distinct freq ranges, one is >Fres and one is <Fres. So, it abruptly jumps from ~320 khz to ~260khz. Only if I turn the pot very slowly, then it will sometimes make a momentary spark as it transitions. Its very strange and i dunno what i did wrong. This happens both when I just leave pin 14 ungrounded or if I add an antenna or secondary base CT.

Has anybody also experienced such problems and can help me? I got a 100mhz digital scope so you can see the oscillograms if you want.

To me it looks like the phase in the feedback loop is 180 degrees off. Try to change eg. the polarity of GDT primary winding.

ok changed it. Now everything is working correctly and the freq locks at ~90 degree, going to 0 degree/180 degree as I raise/lower the primary. Moving the circuit to perf board and posting in project thread once complete
