i was given this question in a math class as a brain teaser but i cant wrap my brain around it, if any one can help me please do so...
1/2 is 3/4 of 5/6 of the number X
read as : Half is three quarters of five sixths of the number X, so what the hell is X? i presume the answer will be an exact fraction.
as near as i get is this-> X times (5/6) is Y ....... Y times (3/4) = (1/2) now my brain is stuck. EDIT: maybe-> Y times (3/4) = (1/2) if Y is (2/3) i think this much works !? (2/3) times (3/4) = (1/2)

You're on the right track, or at least you're on the same track that I'm on. You just have to substitute your first equation x*5/6=y into your second equation 3/4*y=1/2 since your first equation gives you y=something and your 2nd equation has y in it.
Edit: I think your edit came in while I wrote that post, and x=4/5 is the same answer I got.
