Hi guys, I'm looking for some small toroid for TC, ideally made from something. But i have no idea where to look. I tried to bend some metal sheet, which went wrong, used covers from floppy stepper motors, which was iron or something, it was decreasing spark length.

Some ideas where to look? Ideally it should be 3-4cm diameter.

On picture with beer can toroid, which is obviously too big.

I don't have lathe.

Hi Dingo,

For a three to four centimeter toroid you might try a hollow, brass cabinet or door knob. I have used them on small coils. Try Home Depot first, then your average flea market.

Good Luck,

What are they used for / sold as; in a garden center?
That's the tiny one? It look larger in perspective with the mounting box.
If that is a 4.5" sphere and 2.5" dia. secondary, that's almost a duplicate of my small one!
I like the way you did the "antique-furniture" look!

Search for "Gazing ball" on Amazon, eBay, or just Google it.

I've used 12" gazing balls as top electrodes for a couple Van deGraaf generators I built. The ones I got from Amazon were steel and easily cut with a Dremel and a cutoff wheel.

The price of the ball increases non-linearly with the diameter of the ball. The largest and most expensive I've seen is a 22" ball for which was asked roughly $300 US. The 12"er I bought was about $40.

Kinda scary that you ask this question because I was asking myself the same thing yesterday!I actually came up with a pretty cool solution (though availability could be an issue).I simply stacked two of the bells that are used in the old style microwave timers and treated them with a generous layer of JB Weld on the inside to hold them together. The bells all have holes in the center to mount them so there really isnt much to making one of these.Measures 36mm tall by 40mm wide and I should mention that the halves are made of aluminum.Whoops just noticed your size requirements.Worth a try if nothing else pans out.

I think your beer can toroid looks pretty sweet, why not try a red bull can toroid?

Another option is using a plastic toroid (childs toy) and coating it with aluminium foil tape. That's what I do with my small coils, but not that small. There should be something out there though.

There are balls ranging from 2-3 inch to more than 10 inch. They float on water. The one on my 'antique' bedside cabinet is =/- 10"
