Just curious, has anyone eve tied making capacitors out of sheet mica? It's available online cheaply and it has a very high dielectric strength of 3kv/mil fo the average stuff and sometimes even 9kv/mil fo the premium quality stuff.
It could make fo some really nice TC capacitors. with some AgNo3 you can make you own silver mica caps!

My guess is that you can't entirely be sure that it is flawless enough to use as a dielectric. Any irregularities in the surface would compromise its ability to stand off high voltages, especially at radio frequencies.

This is much more flawed, but it may work ell too.
Since mica has such a high dielectric constant, it can be very thin. Thin dielectric = High capacitance. If you silver plate it then you; A) Are as close as you can get to the dielectric (high capacitance) B) Have very high stability.
I don't think it would take much mica at all to make a 20kV 20nf cap bank.
