Hi, I´m new here, registered because of general interest in HV stuff and radioactivity. I messed around a lot with geiger counter circuits and various tubes and eventually ended up with scintillation crystals and PMTs.
Currently I have two probe/NaI crystal assemblies which I got from Scionix, a company located just some kilometers from my home. With some schematics and datasheets I built voltage dividers for them and put everything in a nice housing.
With software like PRA it´s really easy to do some basic gamma counting and spectroscopy.
Some tips for people to get started:
- High voltage supplied needs to be clean for decent spectrums. Special NIM power supplies with very low ripple and drift can be bought on eBay for $$$. I would like to hear from anyone having success duplicating these precision PSUs :) DIY power supplies that suffice for basic use can be found at and but AFAIK they are not stable enough for counting 24 hours in a row.
- To calibrate spectrums, use Cs/137 doped spark gaps, available for cheap, see eBay item 251073085720 (no conn. with seller)
-Scintillation plastics are cheaper than NaI and suffice for basic gamma counting, available from eBay user geoelectronics, for example item 221026810876 (I know seller from Yahoo groups, he sells a lot of fine stuff)
Some pictures that I have from my own experiments:
