You can take it off the board and leave the other windings in place.

If you have a cheap multimeter you can trace the primary coil inputs, instructions are on the net if you look, but, if I remember correctly, the primary coil is the two inputs that have the least resistance (as long as it isn't zero).

Grenadier, can you give me a link to a ZVS driver that will get 50 milliamps out of a flyback?

(I'd love to do this, to prove to people who run 'another website' that it is possible.)

Ash, if I remember correctly, the zvs circuit does not operate in flyback mode, so you can simply put more turns on the primary, and get lower voltage, higher current output. (just normal zvs circuit. remember to lower your cap value if you need to keep the frequency up.

I got 80mA @ 16kV out of mine, somewhere around 1.2kW. It was just a regular ZVS with IRFP260s, 30 turn inductor on a ferrite toroid, and 470 ohm gate resistors.

yes you can just take out the fly back and pulse it but you will have to do it 100s or 1,000s time per sec, thats what these drivers do. and is why your tv make that hi pitch sound when you turn it on its the fly back vibrating at 1,000s of Hz ( cycles per second) from the "pulses"

Can I put AC into a small tranformer?

on the secondary to act as a step up?

I don't think that a flyback will run at 50-60Hz, but i may be wrong

It won't run at 60Hz. They are designed for high frequency operation.

Just try the CFL driver, it really doesn't get any simper than that.

OK, I get it, you don't get the same voltage, but you get more amps.

Sorry, I assumed you meant you'd get more amps at the same voltage.

I can see that this would give you lethal amps, but it's not running in flyback mode.

Is it possible to get >20milliamps at >20kilovolts from a flyback? (I have a few flybacks from early colour TVs, can't remember offhand if they are hitachi or panasonic, one of the two, but they are rumoured to be among the most powerful flybacks available)

Yeah but then you need to disable all the protection circuitry, plus that board is huge and clunky.

Dang ninja posts. @Ash, on a ZVS you can control what you want. A larger value inductor means more volts, but less amps. Really all it takes is trial and error, but 20kV at 20mA is certainly possible with a ZVS.
