Just heard a rumour on another forum that you can use silicone based brake fluid (DOT 5) in a diff pump.

Boiling point is around 260C.

I can't vouch for this myself, but thought I'd pass it on anyway, as other silicone based oils have been suggested in this thread.

EDIT:

Vapor Pressure:
<.1 mmHg @ 20 C.

Thanks! All good stuff!

Anyone know about turbomolecular pump motor drive electronics?

It depends on what kind it is, the most common ones use a three phase induction motor or a single phase permanent magnet motor. Are you looking at the Pfeiffer TPH-055s or the Leybold Turbovac 50s that have been available cheaply on eBay for some time now?

The Pfeiffer one uses a single phase permanent magnet synchronous motor and the Leybold uses a three phase induction motor. There are some drive circuits for both of them posted on the fusor.net and coultersmithing.com forums, the driver for the Pfeiffer is significantly simpler, but I think it could use some improvements.

If you're looking at some other type of turbo pump, the driving electronics is not going to be very different, as long as you know the drive requirements.

I've a couple of controllers, one pfeiffer, one leybold but I've not been able to test them as I have no turbo pumps.

Does anyone know how I could test these without a pump?

It seems a shame to strip them for components if they may work.

I've had a scrapped Varian Turbo-V60 from eBay sitting in a cupboard for years. I stripped and rebuilt it using ultra high vacuum grease on the bearing. It feels ok turned by hand, but I never got around to trying to build a psu. Perhaps I'll have another think about it.

That's a good lead - thanks smile Are these what you had in mind?

Those are the threads I were thinking of, there is also some more speculation on the Pfeiffer driver here Link2

Ash, what are the part numbers of the controllers? Are you willing to part with any of them for money or trade?

The Leybold is a Turbotronic NT20 and the Pfeiffer is a TCP380.

I've been collecting stuff for a system for a while but I have more than I need.

I also have some spare MKS pressure control systems, complete (some I know work, others I'm not sure about), CM guages (various ranges, some still in original vacuum packaging), controllers and throttle valves, some other guage controllers and loads of other stuff. (even ferrofluidic rotary feedthroughs). along with loads of other fittings, MFC's, valves,(some new), etc.

I haven't tested the turbo controllers because I don't have any turbo pumps yet.

I was planning to strip them down for components if they don't work and I can't fix them, there are some pretty good bits and pieces inside, but I may be persuaded to part with some of it, for the right price, but postage etc won't be cheap.

I'd be interested in one of those controllers if it might be close to what my 3-Phase Varian Turbo-V60 needs.

I don't know for certain if either work. The Leybold one have a reputation for blowing something for no reason, the Pfeiffers are supposed to be indestructible.

The main problem, assuming they are both three phase and your pump is three phase, would be the lead. I've seen leads on Ebay for around £1000. It's the other connections that you'd need to find out about.

I do have some contacts in 'the trade', I'll see what I can find out but it may take some time.

Maybe someone else here knows more about these things.
