I find it interesting and amusing that a reference to another person's work could possibly be interpreted as a debate. There was a mention in this thread that an exploration into the area of constructing an ion chamber was in order. For most people pursuing the ways and means of starting out in this direction of homemade instruments, any information directed toward entry level methods and parts should be embraced enthusiastically. Any level of heuristic practice will always trump armchair opinions.
Also, disrespect? How can 'respect' have anything to do with anyone who is enjoying hands-on science? Your comments are non sequiturs to my post.
I wish you the best of luck getting your first attempt at an ion chamber to work perfectly and that it can stand up to the critical assessment necessary for precise measurement!

Hi George,
It is most welcome that you have posted the link to Wenzel's page, a resource well known for most of the readers of this forum interested in possible ways of measuring radiation.
Unfortunately like in the case of many other DIY experiments, the ion chambers presented on that website lacks stability (so accuracy quickly becomes the next problem) - a limitation pointed out correctly by Proud Mary. You can build one and try to calibrate it, but the slightest change in temperature, humidity, density of air, etc, will alter the very sensitive output in an unusable way. You can still use it as a detector, but not as a dosimeter, an important aspect when working with x-rays. I believe the author himself underlined these aspects, indicating the need for an hermetic enclosure (using thin Mica windows to keep the device usable for soft x-rays).
Hope this clarifies the last few messages, so we can continue the discussion without any negative feelings or misunderstandings, for the benefit of us all.
