Did your professor understand that the rail would have the same height as the projectile? Maybe he thought that the rail was thinner than the projectile... that is the only was that there would be distortion at the edges.

It looks like the guy in this video ( is using round projectiles with a spin. I couldn't find anything on google about the particular build? perhaps anyone else has run across info about this particular railgun?
