Looking at getting new laptops
I am thinking of getting a few laptops to dump the pizza fund.
Btw: I like the new Macs for the aesthetics -- but the lack of compatible legacy peripherals makes it inappropriate for development purposes. (They apparently spontaneously combust too.)
I have been looking at the Dell, HP, Toshiba, and IBM (refurbished multimedia units.)
Dell: Inspiron E1705 Special Price: Specs:
HP:
Toshiba: Qosmio line looks neat but still a little pricey (AV600): AV513: AV600: Specs:
IBM:

I love the new Macs, I think they are awesome machines, But legacy stuff can be an issue as you said. I have always had Dell laptops, and would recommend an Inspiron to anyone.

My inspiron 600m has been working well for me for the last 2.5yrs
But I would highly recommend the extended warranty, I had the hdd die once so after a chat with some guy in india I sent it back in and they sent me a faster and 2x as large one
Then the power jack on the mobo got really loose so you had to wiggle it around to make a connection, so I sent it in again and they put in a new mobo.
Even had I just bought the hdd and power jack (on ebay, and soldered it in myself) it probably would have cost more than the 3 year warranty... Too bad they didn't have the 'accidental damage' warranty since my mom dropped it in the floor once and now there is a huge scratch across the bottom and a chunk missing from the side
If you take the dell route, I would recommend checking out the refurbished ones. That is how i got this, I got a 14" 1400x1050 display, 1.6GHz pM processor, 60gb hdd, integrated bluetooth, integrated wifi, .5gb of ram (later upgraded), winXP pro, officeXP pro, etc for like $1500 :-]

How do you like the thinkpad's funky pointer device? I shy away from thinkpads because the touch dealie (what is it called, anyway?) seems so strange and useless looking. They're obviously plenty popular though, so they can't be that bad.

It's called a TrackPoint. I don't like it at all. It could be nice for some because you can keep your hand on the keyboard while moving your pointer, but it's not responsive enough to satisfy me...
I bought an Acer Aspire 3005WLMi about half a year ago, and I like it A LOT. It has everything I need and I haven't had any problems with it so far.

I personally prefer the nipple mouse to the trackpad, and most thinkpads have both built into them nowadays. I hate trackpads because I constantly brush it when typing, and its really uncomfortable for me to arch my hands up more to avoid it (actually, on my right hand, due to an accident, my wrist no longer bends in a manner that would allow me to do that).
What ever you do, stay away from Sony. I have one and hate it. My 8 year old thinkpad recieves way more use than the sony, despite the sony being 6 times faster.

I am not a big fan of the ThinkPad series or the pointer. It’s the proprietary modules with unnecessary extra 3rd party plugs to break, the older units screen ribbon cables, and of course the expensive replacement battery that costs almost what I paid for the whole laptop.
Usually I use a mini USB optical scroll mouse for the portables. Trackpads can be really annoying – but they can be disabled.

I prefer the trackpoint, and that's the reason I chose a thinkpad over any other. Those of us with cold fingers can't use touchpads - they just don't work properly! But I always pull out a real mouse if I can.
