I found a source for HV Zener diodes: used in television applications. Can Zener's be used for a voltage multiplier? In this instance they are 10Kv 25 ma forward voltage drop is 30v.

all a zener diode does, is lets electrons flow 1 direction UNTIL the max voltage is exceeded, the the electrons can flow either direction.

zeners have some chemical, atomic, and physics related properties that make them unwise for your application... the zener may work until its conduction voltage is reached then it would presumably short-explosively-but again i dont see the need to use zeners for this purpose, also i concur in questioning whether kV rated zeners are what you have.

II thought it was odd as well. I had a couple of the same boards and pulled them. They are NTE518: no question. Attached is the sheet. I am aware of the heat issue so I would assume that immersion in oil may be a factor, etc. It's really not that I want to start ripping into boards but they fell into my lap so to speak. They really ARE 10Kv 25 ma. ]333-04507-0-nte518.pdf[/file]
Obviously I have no engineering background so I can't say in terms of their proximity on the board why the effect would be needed where it was. The item was made during the early 1980's and was one of the first groups of TV's with a VCR built in for a classroom. Screen size was 24", disassembled specifically for parts (which is unusual where i get my stuff; the boards were preserved with more care than others). I had planned to run it lower than max for heat issues basically:it was a free source of a HV diode.

The reference to Zener was made from the manufacturer (or middleman) NTE. I searched out the numeric info and their on-line (and printed (same materiel) catalog listed the unit as a Zener. I would be quite please if it was not but the listing did say so. This is actually what lead to my question as I never heard of a Zener configured like that!

You've confused NTE518 - which is a 10kV rectifier intended for TV applications - and the NTE5180A, which is a 6.2V 10W zener diode.
I Concur with Proud Mary. so, quicksilver, it looks like your off the hook.
on a related note, NTE renumbers other manufacturerers components, I first dealt with them 14 years ago, they are a crap supplier in my opinion. Their datasheets are no dam good compared to the original maker. always look for the original part numbers even if covered over by NTE.

As a point of interest, I don't recall ever seeing a Zener diode of more than 270V, and a quick search shows Farnell have none of higher voltage, though that does not mean they don't exist!
Avalanche diodes - which are in some ways not dissimilar to zeners - go up to 1800V or so
