Found this last night Link2
Looks like he has all his best built into this monster. No strike rail needed, flat primary.
Anyone want to guestimate arc length?
There is another vid of it playing "Dance of the sugar plum fairy" Link2
It plays chords too. Very impressive work Steve!!

I dont understand, how does having a flat primary make it so you don't need a strike rail?

It doesn't. The way he protects his electronics do change that.

Oh, yes, I didn't mean to make it sound like the flat primary makes it so he doesn't need a strike rail.
He explained some time ago, how he managed to do away with the strike rail, and direct strikes to the primary did no harm.
Perhaps someone else remembers where that info is?

Edit: found it Link2

Thats just the latest version of my "DRSSTC-2", which some argue I should no longer consider it to be. The secondary is the original from the DR-2, but since an accident a few years back, i fiberglassed over it and then painted it blue.

Its just a CM300 bridge down there with a .5uF tank cap. Primary is 3/8" copper, water cooled with a fountain pump. The strike rail is square and made up of .75" hard copper pipe.

My past attempts at making the driver immune to primary strikes probably isnt 100% effective. Its best to include electrostatic shielding (strike rails) around vulnerable areas.

Longest sparks are still around 11 feet or so, maybe a very rare 12 foot strike. Current limiter is set to 1250A as i recall.

We have 2 of these coils that we use for shows, so they were built with reliability in mind... but just in case, the entire drive can be swapped out with a spare unit in a matter of minutes. Of course, with that feature designed in, we have yet to have the need to replace a driver (indeed we were hoping murphy would enforce this).

That is incredible performance from CM300 coil!

I assume you are using phase lead driver with this one?

Well, it's super impressive Steve.
The blue secondary, base enclosure, and top load had me thinking it was a new machine.
The "voices" that you are creating had me watching it again and again. Were they 2 or 3 notes being played when you play the chords on it?

Hm, i had similar results with my coil, but i used simple interrupter ( just ton toff ) and get same massive arcing like you, but after some second bridge just exploded, ant that was 450A 1200 IGBT with simple cooling...
I will try to beat that with CM600 bridge smile
