I see, thanks for the answers. Have you thought of encapsulating the coils in a flux enhancer? That should probably give you some much higher projectile speeds.

I have powedered iron end-caps. Research suggests that the outer shell doesn't make much difference in performance.

Still, it wouldn't take much work to encapsule them in a shell. And you'd get a nice boost. But of course, you decide for yourself if you want to do it or not! It just seem like a pity to put so much work into a coil gun, and then not bother with an outer shell.

Try custom molding a precision part out of powdered iron, and you'll find that it actually takes a tremendous amount of work. And remember you have to do it eight times, once for each coil.

You hardly get any boost at all- reference the link in my previous post.

What you end up with is a heavier, bulkier gun that took longer to build and offers no measurable advantage, save the added trauma it will prodce if wielded as a club.

Finally finished the ammo and magazine! It holds 20 rounds.

Finishing this part was nightmarish to say the least, what you see here is the second attempt on the magazine, 3rd attempt on the follower, and 4th attempt on the spring. The first magazine build was proven wrong, with my hammer. I still have lots to figure out with the feeding mechanism. How will I get the rounds to line up with the entrance to the first coil? Will the solenoid punch the rounds hard enough to push them out of the magazine clips? I'm not sure yet, but at least I can finally move on with the rest of the construction.

After a lengthy false start, a month off, then a redesign, the gun frame is starting to come together.
