I was thinking in dimensioning the tube to be used as a waveguide, how feasible is this idea?

The optimum internal dimensions of a rectangular 2.4GHz waveguide are 110mm x 55mm.

I'd just like to add, make sure that you test the transition and antenna sepetately to ensure a low VSWR over the band which the magnetron works. You dont want any nasty standing waves being set up in the magnetron waveguide. Depending on its power output, arcing may occur.

may be useful. It also describes how to get a microwave magnetron to run in CW mode, by replacing the capacitor with a smaller one.

Thanks Ash, that was the article I referred to in my post above, but I couldn't remember where I left it on the intertubes. smile It's an excellent demonstration of how to couple radio waves out of a magnetron and into whatever crazy experiment you have in mind.

Ive seen instructions for these cantennas before and not once have I seen data on the return loss or VSWR. Just looking at it I can see that the match will be very poor because there is no 'slug' on the E field probe. If you connect this antenna to a network analyser you will see a poor match. It will still 'work' but could be greatly improved by having a much wider probe. This will allow much better power transfer from coax to waveguide.

I have been working on an 'optimum' cantenna and will post the results and instrictions/drawings on here with results when I have tested it.
