Interesting paper. Just to finish up on my experiences with all this - I had an eye test in Sept 2011 where my left eye (the one they operated on back in February 2011) was found to have an increased astigmatism of 14 degrees - bear in mind it hadn't moved for the previous 10 years, and you'll see why I was having trouble seeing in focus - glasses (well, the lenses) for my prescription cost a small fortune (about USD 500) so I held off getting a new pair until I had two consecutive prescriptions the same - had another last month and the astigmatism has moved back towards where it used to be by 12 degrees and seems to have stabilised, so as of today, I have new glasses !! Hooray!

Back to that paper - initially I had a grey area in the lower left hand portion of my vision - right in the corner, not in the field of view but enough to be annoying. Now, it almost seems to be gone - this could be from the effect in the paper (good read) or it could be due to the human brain's remarkable ability to compensate for stuff like this. In total, I had nearly 2000 shots into my left eye, the last 1000 of which were up to 800mW with my eye "blocked" (turned off and anaesthetised and my head clamped).

Whatever the reason, I can now read the bottom line of the eye test chart with ease. High refractive index varifocals (Seiko in my case) are wonderful things.

Cheers

You need to read past the first sentence of the first post.
