The idea is very useful because you can hear things that are impossible to see on a regular oscilloscope. I have several times debugged strange problems by listening to signals that looked perfect but had regular distortions that were audible.


Do you mean signal tracer to hear the waveform or real voltmeter (actually VCO)??

I have used three different methods:
1. A piezoelectric speaker connected directly to the signal if possible.
2. A frequency divider in front of the speaker.
3. Sample the signal at a suitable frequency and play it back on the computer.

For example I once had a microcontroller related problem but the waveform it generated looked perfect on the oscilloscope. When I connected the speaker I could instantly hear that the signal did not sound perfectly clean. It turned out that the microcontroller was receiving interrupts that it was not supposed to.

Add to Bj/orns's list a fourth way which can sometimes be handy for listening to the tempo of a microcontroller program ... stand an AM radio next to the circuit board
