LM2576 and LM2676.
They are both unisolated DC-DC converter IC's but the difference's are that the LM2676 has an internal FET switch and runs at 260khz, whilst the LM2576 uses an NPN transistor switch and runs at 52khz. Both are rated for 3 amps switch current.
Of-course you could always use an external switch!
But both of them are great linear regulator replacements, and if you really need low ripple an external PI filter can get you well below 5mV of ripple.

The only reason I mentioned the LM2676 too is that the older LM2576 can dissipate a good few watts when it has to switch higher currents (got one driving some warm white LED strips in my room). The LM2676 (IMO) was a better choice for this application, although I am sure you can much better IC's these days.
