Hi all, For my Senior Project at school I am building two ROVs. One is a small mini-sub connected by a tether. The tether contains a Fiber Optic Link so that I can get longer tether lengths without needing inline amplifiers and so that if there is a short or a break in the tether it is not carrying any electricity. I got my Arduino Ethernet Shield today, and for fun wrote a little script to make it connect to the Internet Archive and search google hehe
However, I have a little confusion on how I am going to go about with my control scheme: the Arduino is on the Mini-Sub: the ethernet shield plugs into the Fiber media Converter and that goes to my laptop on the surface. I planned on using a web server on my laptop, with the Arduino as a Client but the tests I ran with websites presented a potential problem: how to send in my control data, and after failing again how to have the arduino sort for the data I am sending.
any ideas to point me in the right direction?? I thought about running multiple servers on the arduino, each on a different port but the same IP address and on my laptop accessing one of them to carry out a function, would this work?

EDIT: I forgot to mention this: I know about using things like HTML forms, but I want to use a faster-responding methid that is more user friendly (like interface a Visual Basic Program, which can access the internet)

I'd guess you need some server-side scripting. Is there a way to add a "magic page" to your Arduino web server? On full size servers this is normally done with CGI, PHP, Microsoft ISAPI or Perl, but maybe the Arduino's web server has a more lightweight API that lets you hook up pieces of C++ code to web pages.

I might be able to try something like that - maybe make some custom headers to make it work, and as forthe iPhone this is perfect because the other r/c vehicle I am building will eventually be controlled by an iPhone as well, but I'd still need a separate screen fir the video feed - I look into it, thy would be a very convenient way to do it all
