Hello all,
i have nearly finished my new single 811A VTTC. The details are as follows:
Secondary-3.5in diameter/10in tall----30awg heavy build wire.
Primary-16turns 18awg
Feedback-16turns 18awg wire, all on a 4.5in form
grid leak resistor-7kohm 25watt
grid leak capacitor-10kv .001uF ceramic
tank capacitor-10kv .0013uF ceramic
MOT-2700volt
Filament xfmr-12.6volt 4 amp(centertaped for 6.3volts)

Here are a few pics:This one full blast....About 4 inchers...

Here are some more pics-GREATLY overdriven amazed
Level shifted with a diode and MOT capacitor, full blast! Yes, that tube IS that bright!

Hehe, be careful running those tube over a dull orange glow, once they tun yellow they start to vaporise the plate amazed You don't really notice it unitl it is almost gone, and you can see right through it (don't ask how I know this angry )

Looking good, a few suggestions...

The choke on the anode... Move it further from the tube, those things emit soo much ir heat it is not even funny. I managed to melt polycarbonate about 2" from the tube amazed

Also, 7k sounds a little big for the grid leak... Could you try a slightly smaller oe and see how it affects spark length?

Yea, i dont leave the tube powered like that for more than a few seconds...Wattmeter showed over 600watts!!!Yow!Beefy tube...

That resistor is the only value of its kind that i have like that...I did briefly hold another in parallel with it, sparks didnt do much better, the tube just got hotter:-P

A few things to do-Build a base for the secondary/primary to sit on over the circuit(typical tesla coil style enclosure)
Change the tank cap to a doorknob, as im told this type is more for bypass(although it doesnt heat at all, even at full blast!)Totally redo the primary/feedback windings...Right now, this is a lashup to test the circuit.
And oh yea, a staccato circuit to allow full voltage in, and to save that tube!
I was concerned about the filter resistor/inductor as well, but it seems to do fine, i may move it above the tube though if it begins to heat up significantly.

Speaking of heating up significantly, hows that shorted-turn hard-drive platter doing?

Consider cutting a radius out of it or moving it further away from the flux wink

It doesnt heatup...Its just a semi-temporary fix until the day i find a mini toroid that looks pretty wink

Nice results for an 811.

Wondering if that tube is still kicking? I have seen tubes glow like that but only once! dead

If you havn't done a toroid yet you might consider my el-cheapo hardware store topload.
Get 4 PVC elbows that give you tyhe correct Major OD, put them together, tape a piece of plastic across the top, then tape the rest of the toroid with aluminum tape.

looks like this.
