The power module in my NTB crapped out and can run only on battery now.
I need a program which can make a backup/image of the whole ntb HDD to an external USB2 HDD. I must be able to do this in Windows to make use of the full USB2 speed, I tried a bootable backup program (Norton "Ghost") but it is too slow and the remaining battery charge would not be sufficient to back the whole HDD up.

Any suggestions? Is it even possible to back up all of the system files in use?

What is a NTB? Can you bodge it to run off a bench power supply or car battery?

Regardless, the solution is probably to open it up, take the hard drive out, put it into a USB caddy, and plug that into another computer. If you do this, the system files are not in use, so the whole disk can be backed up easily.

I keep a spare caddy around that has both IDE and SATA, and a 3.5 to 2.5 adaptor, and it's saved my hide a few times.

There are quite a few hard disk imaging programs for Windows, like Acronis True Image, but I don't know of any free ones.

NTB is a notebook, or a laptop.

I would not hack it to run off a homemade PSU as its still in warranty and I dont want to mess it up even more. I was thinking just backing up my HDD and sending it to warranty repair. Don't have any 2.5" HDD external boxes.

I'll second what Steve said -- I've got a smart connector here which will plug into any 3.5" or 2.5" IDE/SATA drive and spews out USB2 the other side. Pretty invaluable when formatting / starting fresh. Your best bet is probably to pick one up and use with another PC to save your stuff.
