Hi guys,
I have a webserver as a network bridge between my modem/router, and all other PCs in the flat. I'm looking to have a better idea of how much traffic is going to each PC so come end-of-month we don't have the main connection throttled by the ISP.

I'd also like outside packets going to the webserver to get highest priority, if possible. Here's my setup, summarized:

Modem/router(DHCP) >> webserver >> switch >> other PCs

Is there any software that could perform the function of a network bridge (webserver has three network cards), and also meter the traffic?

If at a later date I wanted to throttle connections after they hit a particular limit, is there software that can do this?

Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

A computer with two network cards and Wireshark (also known as Ethereal) installed will give you the possibility to monitor all traffic that is going through the line.

Thanks -- I tried WireShark, it's very advanced, and it looks like I need to capture everything to a file in order to summarize the data. I'm just looking for up/down data by IP address. Will keep trying.

Any other recommendations?

Does your webserver run Linux? I've never seen software that does what you want under Windows, but I'm sure Linux has it. I'm sure I've seen dedicated firewall/server distros that include bandwidth limiting, but I don't know how you would bolt it onto an existing installation.

Steve, laughably, the server is running Windows XP. I'm considering running Windows 2003 which may be plausibly secure, and doing VPN for clients (so e.g. can poison DNS after they exceed bandwidth cap). I might resort to putting 'DU Meter' software on PCs so I have a general overview, but it would be a bit invasive.

Linux + rshaper

or

IPCOP if you are paranoid
Link2

Simple to setup a firewalled LAN, web server, and dynDNS host name on the WAN.

Also note Windows IIS signatures attract worms.. sort of like how bloody chum attracts sharks.

Ew, Windows! If I were your housemate, I'd move. Linux is really the best bet for this, so there's never been a better time to learn how to use it.

Or, think like a politician. You might know that you can't cap bandwidth using your current setup, but your housemates presumably don't. So just use the threat of it to persuade them to pay for unlimited DSL, and leave your webserver as it is. If they need convincing, just pull their network cables out a few days before the end of the month, or something cheesey
