I just wanted a little advice on configuring BartPE for browsing the web and emergency recovery. Basically I want to use it on a computer that has the hard drive removed for the purpose of browing the more seedy side of the net without any fear of getting malware. I also want it configured for emergency data recovery along with some basic computing functionality incase LSASS or some other system file craps out on me while I'm on the road or something.

Any advice?

I reckon a Knoppix CD is more appropriate than BartPE. BartPE has pretty limited functionality, and it wouldn't detect my network adapater. Knoppix in my experience works pretty well on most hardware. If you're concerned about picking up malware when browsing the internet for gay llama porn or whatever, then Linux is pretty much immune, as most internet malware is Windows-specific.

Knoppix is also a handy rescue tool, I've frequently used it to recover used files from a broken Windows install via LAN or USB hard drive. It can also apparently be used to edit the registry, but I've yet to try this.

I'll try Knoppix out too, I've been trying BartPE out a bit and yeah, it can't detect the network card angry
I have been pretty happy with it otherwise, I can run a ton of programs without any issues. I've even made a couple plugins for it already which seem to do their job... I just gotta get the network card driver workin. rolleyes

There's also Damn Small Linux, though I'm not sure if it's still supported. I once had a diskless machine that booted DSL from a CF card.

Also, some people use VMWare for things like this. You do your dodgy browsing in a virtual machine, so if a virus whacks it, you just throw it away and load a fresh copy.

Of course neither of the above will stop myrussianbride.com from abusing your credit card details :)

I havent really played with it too much, but a distro called SLAX seems like a good one to go with. IIRC, it is still updated and supported by its writer, and is designed to run off of anything from CDs to jump drives to memory cards. If I actually took the time to set it up correctly, it seems like it could be a very useful computing tool.

I agree with Firefox, you should try SLAX.
