Ok so i saw that a computer cd drive can be used as a cd player. I thought that this was a really good idea since i could use the digital out to get better sound quality... but the problem is i don't know how to control the playback, such as play pause and skip track. Is there some simple circuit that i could build that would allow me to control this? The other similar projects i've seen online have all had the controls on the front panel of the drive. The one i have is a cd burner and reader, so i don't know if that determines if it will function without cominicating with a motherboard.

It is possible to control playback over the IDE interface using a microprocessor, but really its way easeir to get a $5 cd-rom drive that has a play and next button on it.

Hi guys I have done this before, my old CD-ROM drive had integrated play/skip and stop/eject buttons. I doubt without some PIC or whatever in there you'll get it to do much unless it has the functions on the front. Here's the mess I bodged to see if it would work: http://petezel.org/repo/data/cdplayerhax.JPG http://petezel.org/repo/data/CD%20Player%20Hack.jpg Note that the speakers used a 12V Iron core transformer and 4 diodes as a fullwave rectifier, I just used the 12V 'P4' power lines on the ATX. This is functional, however the drive creates a fair bit of HF on the power rails that then are amplified so you can hear when it changes track and whilst playing, squeals a bit. A remedy might be passing the amplifier or drive power cable though a ferrite bead a few times. Good luck with getting an old drive and hacking it!
