the "build it myself" thing was because i hoped there would be some way to make a "ghetto" programmer to save me some money, im spendin WAY to much cash on electronics and in denmark a semi-decent USB programmer costs about 100$!

I made a rather cheap USB programmer, the write up is here. You'll need to program the 18F2550 first somehow, so it's a chicken or the egg dilema. A simple JDM programmer or something should be able to do it.

I recommend arduino to get started as well, that was my first (currently using the dual core design for a high speed rig)
anyway, I thought about trying this, but never did (might want other feedback before you do): the arduino features an ICSP connector, allowing for near direct connection to a parallel port for programming in a standard way instead of using the custom arduino environment (e.g., you should be able to use other chips) and the arduino is only $35, and here is all the info you would need
FYI: when it says use an external programmer, the parallel connector works
