hello All,
On my tower pc if i buy a new mouse it stops working within a couple of hours. this doesnt matter wether i plug into usb port or mouse port or whether mechanical or optical. Does this sound like a power supply problem?
maybe voltage has gone high?

cheers

We'll need a bit more information.

Do any other peripherals work (keyboard, webcam, joystick, etc) when plugged into the USB and/or PS/2 ports?

Do the affected mice work on another computer when plugged in after 'dying' on your computer?

Its highly unlikely to be the power supply itself. Multiple systems on the motherboard use the various voltages. If in fact the power supply had gone bad, you'd be having a lot more trouble than just some dodgy peripherals. Its possible that the USB host controller's regulator has failed, but I don't see as how that would cause the PS/2 ports to go as well.

Seems like your common thread here is software. Got working antivirus software? Is windows showing any other driver instabilities? You might have some colossal cock-up brewing in your registry.

Hi Dave,

Could well be a windows problem. The anti virus has gone out of date as use laptop mainly now. It may be a registry melt down i suppose as it takes around 10-15 minutes to boot up!!!!!!

It does have small memory 256mb but shouldnt be that slow right?

how would i check registry please? i am more of a pc user than anything else.

cheers

Windows XP or earlier should boot in less than 30 seconds using 256 MB RAM. If it is slower then it usually means that a lot of software that you don't need is starting up automatically.

msconfig

type it in the "Run" prompt. Then look at the "startup" tab.

Just do some google searches on each of the applications that it lists to learn what they are BEFORE you disable them. Crap like quick-time player will always try to set itself up to start on start up.

Broken USB stack most likely. Only cure is a full rebuild.

Seen this n times before, where n is a large number.

Even Microsoft now advise "nuke from orbit" as the recommended fix for anything like this, especially if viruses are even suspected.

Sorry about this, but if you absolutely need that data, Ghost the drive to a spare then nuke the original, AV it, and then ghost once everything works to a DVD. then the next time the fix is 15 minutes instead of four hours.

regards, -A

btw yes you can use an external hard disk to store images on if you wish.
