Hi, my friends laptop developed this problem, the LCD flickers randomly and have werid white wash/ white horizontal lines. I took it apart and found out its not the back light, but related to the EMI shield. I found that if the EMI shield is in close proximity(pressed down) to the back of the LCD, it works fine. so I sandwiched some tin foil between the LCD and the original EMI shield(alu taped to the lid), and now it works fine.
So what was the problem? EMI affecting the TFTs?

could be ground became detached from pcb, this causes nasty problems due to the hv from the ccfl "floating" onto all the logic lines.

make sure you check this, or else the HV return may find a way back where it isn't wanted..

I've always imagined it not to be the grounding, but intermittent connection of the far more fragile, ever so delicate wires within the sheath.

Could be a simple dry joint on the LCD's ground connector.

From a tech support point of view, I would say to check the inverter cable connections to the LCD panel and the motherboard. However, since you took it apart and added the foil you effectively reseated those connections already. The shielding should not be lose, however, so that alone could easily have been the problem. Am I correct in guessing the system is no longer in warranty? If it is, calling tech support to get it replaced should be easy based on the symptoms alone.
