I'm writing a new website for StormNet (formerly, and soon to be again, stormnet.org ) storm chase team, and I'm currently tackling the forecasting page, which offers a variety of weather models, observations, and other forecast products.
The National Weather Service offers a variety of extremely useful RSS feeds of their data, most of which can be used as-is in java based rss applets directly on the website. However, theres one feed that would be particularly useful, except its MASSIVE, and carries alot of stuff that I don't want to display.
Basically I'm interested in taking that very bloated feed, and somehow filtering it so that it only includes items that have the words Tornado and Warning together, or Thunderstorm and Warning together. I've done a good bit of googling, but it seems the only such filtering scripts and programs are for the client side, not the server side. It seems like PHP or a similar language could do it, just searching for the proper words then copying and pasting everything between the
<item></item>
tags into its own RSS file.
I'd typically turn to Chris Russell for advice here, but he has limited experience with RSS as well. Anyone able to offer suggestions on how I might go about doing this? If that turns out to be relatively easy, I've got some slightly more complex search strings that I'd like to apply, but those are a much lower priority.
I'm all ears. If anyone can figure out an easy way to do this on the server side, my eternal gratitude would be yours.
