I've heard of several linux OS platforms that work really great. I know there is the old Redhat linux, DSL linux..., but what would be a good upgrade to use? Just want everyone's two cents:D.

I use FreeBSD, which is strictly not Linux but a direct descendant of the old AT&T Unix.
FreeBSD is robust, powerful and RTFM. It is about the least "user friendly" you can get, in the Windoze sense of user friendly, but the most nerd friendly in my view.
You really have to ask what you want your box to do. It's like buying a car. Do you want an economical vehicle for driving around the city? Or a big loud 4WD? A racy sports car? Or a car that's slick on the inside that you can pull apart and tinker with?

fedora has SELinux schema MAC security -- server / firewall research stuff... SuSE is Novell supported -- corporate... Knoppix is Debian live dvd -- developer / audit... Ubuntu studio -- User media and web... LinuxCNC -- Mill control freeSCO Slackware -- old multi print/fax server uClinux - ported to AVR etc...
