I have been learning how to code in C (working on rev 3 of my gps tracking system) while waiting for parts for my RGB laser, and I noticed my 405nm laser diode (extracted from a ps3's optical drive) all mounted and colaminated without any power and I just couldn't stand the injustice....
So I recycled a usb connector off an 'old' printer, grabed a 330uf cap (to help prevent any spikes on the usb bus) a 3R8 resistor, and a few inches of cellophane tape...
I have no idea how much power it has, but I am running it at 40ma (about 150mw input to the diode) and despite the beams very large diameter (about 1/8") you can feel it when it contacts skin (not that I recommend shooting a UV laser at yourself...) I am guessing that is because 400nm light has a very small penetration distance in skin (few hundred uM?) so it heats the skin very efficiently.

Well, even if this thing is 100% efficient, 150mw in a .1" diameter circle is 20w/in^2, not much more than a decently powerful UV lamp.
But on the flip side, unlike a florescent tube, this thing can be focused down to a .5uM spot, which actually makes it quite efficient at burning stuff! With a Fl=1" lens I can burn through a piece of electrical tape in about 30s
Pretty good for a optical drive read laser....
/me decides to always wear UV glasses and not point the beam at myself anymore
