This is my own half-assed design for a plotter. It works okay, but there are a lot of issues with the hardware. The pen carriage moves a bit too much, and I had to implement some special looping and control to eliminate the Y carriage inertia overshoots. It needs a redesign with worm gears and the rotation sensors need to be motor shaft coupled for accuracy.

I was hoping to get the serial communication going, but I'm not a programmer, and getting it to print EE 405 all in C wasn't very easy, let alone talking about spooling and all the fancy neat things it should do. Anyway, here are some pics before I submit it.

Oh, it takes 6 pages of code to do that, if you're wondering. That's with functions and closed loop design.

That's really cool. Looks like you did a great job. Are you using the Lego Mindstorms computer software to program the rcx or are you doing it some other way? I've bee thinking about making one of these with the new NTX(?) or NXT(?), don't remember, since that version has built in rotation sesors and all. Only problem is they motors have such a odd shape they they are very difficult to work with. They're also lacking in the torque area. Anyways, keep up the good work.

This is all programed in LegOS using the Bricx command IDE, and C code. You could use NQC also, but I had the LegOS firmware dumped to the RCX already. The NXT looks promising, but to do this right, you really ought to look into using RoboLab and LabView.

Here's an example that's far superior to mine, but I only had 5 days to do mine, not years:
